Back to all articles

Introduction

The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises took a major step towards simplifying the registration process for Informal Micro Enterprises (IMEs) with the launch of the Udyam Assist Platform on January 11, 2023. Implemented by SIDBI, this initiative aimed to issue Udyam Assist Certificates, enabling IMEs without GSTN to register conveniently. Remarkably, within the past 14 months, over 1.50 crore IMEs have successfully registered on this platform, highlighting its effectiveness and importance.

Government Recognition

A significant milestone was achieved when the Government of India, through Gazette Notification S.O. 1296(E) dated March 20, 2023, recognized the Udyam Assist Platform’s certificates as equivalent to Udyam Registration Certificates. This recognition was crucial as it allowed IMEs to access Priority Sector Lending (PSL) benefits, thereby providing them with much-needed financial support and opportunities for growth.

RBI Circular: Facilitating Financial Inclusion

Building on the government’s recognition, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued a circular on May 09, 2023, further solidifying the status of IMEs with Udyam Assist Certificates. The circular classified these enterprises as Micro Enterprises under MSME for PSL classification purposes. This move not only aligned with the government’s vision of promoting MSMEs but also facilitated their inclusion in priority sector lending, ensuring easier access to credit facilities and financial resources.

Conclusion: Driving Growth and Inclusivity

The Udyam Assist Platform, coupled with the government’s recognition and the RBI’s classification, represents a significant advancement in empowering Informal Micro Enterprises. By simplifying registration processes and providing access to financial benefits, this initiative plays a crucial role in fostering the growth and development of MSMEs in India. It underscores the government’s commitment to promoting economic inclusivity and creating an enabling environment for small businesses to thrive.
